Ariana Harner visits Big Timbers Museum, honoring the history of the Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy

Ariana Harner, coauthor of Children of the Storm: The True Story of The Pleasant Hill School Bus Tragedy, recently visited the Big Timbers Museum in Prowers County, CO. Her visit brought renewed attention to the local community still deeply connected to the tragedy that occurred in 1931.

On the morning of March 26, 1931, students excitedly boarded Carl Miller's bus under clear skies and sixty-degree temperatures. By the time they reached the pair of one-room schoolhouses, the weather had drastically changed, with a sudden spring snowstorm setting in. Acting on the teachers' instructions to seek shelter, Miller drove the children toward a nearby home, but soon lost his way in the whiteout, lodging the bus in a ditch. A day and a half later, rescuers found the survivors, but the deadly blizzard had already taken its toll.
